Frequently asked questions

A credit card is a card that can act as a small loan that you borrow from the credit union or any other bank. It is NOT free money! Every time you purchase something with a credit card, you are borrowing money from the bank or credit union. This means that you eventually will have to pay it back once you receive your credit statement. If you do not pay it back on time by the end of the statement period, then you will lower your credit score, and you will accrue additional interest over time.

Every credit card has a limit. Secured cards can have limits as low as $300, and as high as $10,000. If you are starting out with your first credit card, then you will only be able to get one with a lower limit between $500 to $1000. Once you establish your credit score, months later, you will be able to increase your limit. Ideally, you should pay off your statement amount to keep from reaching your credit limit, but there is also a minimum payment. So if your statement says that you owe $250, but the minimum is $25, then you should pay at least $25 to keep your score from dropping.

A secured credit card means that you put a specific amount of money up front based on your limit. If you give the credit union $300, then you will obtain a secured card with a $300 limit. The whole purpose of giving the credit union the $300 is so there is a safety net just in case you fail to pay off your card, hence why it is called a “Secured Card.” This is useful for first-time credit card holders, in order to build your credit.

An unsecured credit card is a card that does not need any money to be given to the credit union in the first place.
